Hominid Pictures consists of six young filmmakers that aspire to write and make films that are worth telling
A troubled teen serving her community sentence at a hospital finds out she has a lot more in common with an Indonesian patient than she wants to admit.
Kakek which means grandfather in Indonesian was inspired by our scriptwriter's memory. She was 15 years old when her mother took her to the hospital to see an ailing Indonesian man whom she had never met before. Her mom befriended the old man at a market where he used to sell 'sayur kampung'. Her family ended up adopting this lone 'stranger' as their own. The fondest memory she had of him was when the old man proudly told a fellow patient that she was his granddaughter.
Kakek’s crew are all passionate students, but in filmmaking, whether a student or not, the main challenge is getting fund. And we are determined to make this idea into a reality!
We have budgeted this film to be more than RM9,000. Everything we make here on Mystartr will be primarily used on the most crucial aspect of the film; equipment, cast and location. Any extra money gained wil be fully utilised in making this short film.
We will try to make this film as economically as possible without compromising the high production value. On top is a breakdown of the budget.
Since most of our crew are still students, scheduling everyone to pull this project together is the biggest challenge for sure. However, we believe that we can overcome this issue as most of are used to the pressure of uncounted numbers of assignments given at a time. We highly value time and hopefully we can deliver Kakek with the highest production value despite being on a low budget and limited time.
The hospital is one of the most important element to our story. In a sense, the hospital itself is a character in Kakek. The texture, aesthetic, and ambience of the general hospital is what will set the mood and tone throughout the whole story. We are in the process of looking for a general hospital and it is quite a challenge to secure one as they are unusually busy. So far we had recced Hospital Sg. Buloh, Hospital Banting, University Malaya and Rumah Seri Kenangan; and we are in the process of locking down the locations. They are all located within 45 minutes driving range from all of our crew.
Filmmaking is often risky in terms of budget, and it's very difficult to plan precisely how much we will spend making the film. This is why we have a contingency in case of unplanned expenditure, just in case if we go over budget.
We love making films but eventually all filmmakers can agree that it is not easy to make them. So do support us! Even if you are a bit tight on budget (we know it, we're in that situation too right now, thus creating this page), there are many other ways that you can help. Spread the word!
